Biofilm growth on medical implants with randomness
نویسندگان
چکیده
Biofilms are colonies of bacteria that attach to surfaces by producing extracellular polymer substances. They may cause serious infections in humans and animals, and also cause problems in hydraulic machinery. In this paper we model the growth of a biofilm established on a medical implant. We assume that the biofilm’s growth is given by a logistic reaction term with the growth rate being a random variable with a given distribution. This way we take into account the variability in the bacterial populations, and the measurement and experimental errors. The diffusion coefficient of the microbes is also taken to be random. A stochastic spectral representation of the parameters and the unknown stochastic process is used, together with the polynomial chaosmethod, to obtain a system of partial differential equations, which is integrated numerically to obtain the evolution of the mean and higher-order moments with respect to time. Some examples are presented. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Effects of biofilm formation in bacteria from different perspectives
Bacterial communities are able to form complex and three-dimensional biofilm structures. Biofilm formation is an ancient and integral component of the prokaryotic life cycle and a key factor for survival in diverse niches. In biofilms, bacterial lifestyle changes from free-floating cells to sessile cells. Presence in biofilms gives new traits to bacteria, which distinguish them from free cells....
متن کاملMonitoring of Wild Pseudomonas Biofilm Strain Conditions Using Statistical Characterisation of Scanning Electron Microscopy Images
The present paper proposes a novel method of quantification of the variation in biofilm architecture, in correlation with the alteration of growth conditions that include, variations of substrate and conditioning layer. The polymeric biomaterial serving as substrates are widely used in implants and indwelling medical devices, while the plasma proteins serve as the conditioning layer. The presen...
متن کاملInhibition of Biofilm Formation with Electrospun Titanium Dioxide Films
A biofilm is a group of microorganisms that attach and grow on a solid surface. Biofilms are common in nature. They can cause clogs and corrode pipes, cause infections when formed on medical implants, and cost billions of dollars in damages, so it is desirable to prevent their growth. This work explores the ability of electrospun titanium dioxide to inhibit the growth of biofilms of pseudomonas...
متن کاملAntibacterial activity and biofilm inhibition by surface modified titanium alloy medical implants following application of silver, titanium dioxide and hydroxyapatite nanocoatings.
One of the most common causes of implant failure is peri-implantitis, which is caused by bacterial biofilm formation on the surfaces of dental implants. Modification of the surface nanotopography has been suggested to affect bacterial adherence to implants. Silver nanoparticles are also known for their antibacterial properties. In this study, titanium alloy implants were surface modified follow...
متن کاملThe effect of nanochitosans particles on Candida biofilm formation
Background and Purpose: In people wearing dentures, the growth of various Candida species under the prosthesis leads to the formation of biofilm, which can play the role of a reservoir for Candida and other kinds of microbes. Since nano-chitosan particles can cause lasting antimicrobial activity, a more recent approach that utilizes acrylic resins with nano-chitosan particles is proposed. Th...
